Of health and benevolent fat shaming.
Just like benevolent sexism, benevolent body shaming is getting prevalent. Statements like "obesity is bad", preventative steps to be taken to avoid being obese, health related issues are more prejudiced than caring.
In the case of being obese, any health care professional would recommend losing weight. And people should be made aware of the risks NOW rather than later when it's too late to make positive changes to their health. It's in everyone's best interest to support each other in living a healthy lifestyle. And people think people who are obese are not doing that and it’s being said it’s okay and even glorified.
But, you have no idea why a fat person, or in this case, a woman gained her weight. You have no idea about her life either. And the point is not health but beauty image. It’s about not calling a woman ugly; disgusting or worthless based on her size. The biggest problem in fat shaming is the needs to be addressed in the sake of personal health. Personal health is just that.
Personal. Like men and women smoking and drinking despite the knowing of the health hazards of doing so. While Indians associate women drinking and smoking as spoiling culture, all it spoils in reality is health. And, health is a personal issue, one that only the person has the right to decide.
A woman knows her body and her life more than you do Just because a person is not that large does not mean they're automatically healthy.
Nobody tells a thin woman or average woman how much she should eat or exercise.
Everyone assumes they know how a large woman can lose weight and they only treat her as her size. They don't treat her as a person, only as a weight number. That needs to change. Thin is not necessarily healthy and fat isn’t necessarily unhealthy - the popular perception needs to change as well.
Everyone wants to be healthy and lead a fulfilling life but everyone has different ways to do it. Respect that and quit fat shaming.
