Guys, if you want to understand menstruation, start with the right facts
Okay, first of all, we appreciate you guys trying to understand what we girls go through when we menstruate. We're very happy that you guys are making the effort to understand the reproduction physiology of the female human body that's considered taboo, dirty and disgusting by our Indian society. Except for the fact that you are resorting to falsehoods in the process.
Take a look at this meme on the left. Dude, I understand you are trying to understand the pain we girls go through but there is no heavy lower abdominal pain 2 weeks before periods. What we girls do experience are breast tenderness and engorge, mood swings due to the hormones oestrogen and progesterone fucking our brains. Two days before periods, there might be some degree of pain at the lower back. Again, it's different for every girl - no two female humans have the same symptomatic reproduction process. And, no, period pain doesn't feel like electrocution by lightning - it feels like the devil is ripping your uterus apart or a chainsaw sawing your womb. What we experience 2 weeks before periods is PMS.
Get your facts right boys.
This guy Madan Gowri is just delusional and ignorant and if I may add a third, goofy. Just goofy.
Three falsehoods by Madan Gowri:
1. Menstruating women emit negative energy that can render gods in temples powerless.
First of all, he didn't pay attention in Physics class - energy neither can be created not destroyed. E = mc2. Namma Thala Albert Einstein found that equation. There is no such thing as positive or negative energy in science - the only places they exist is in the realm of pseudoscience. Menstrual blood is just blood and tissue - it doesn't have any power to cancel out any power. No voodoo stuff here.
2. Predatory animals attack menstruating women - hence women aren't allowed at Sabarimala.
LOL, dude. Predatory animals don't attack humans as a result of smelling period blood. Fact: Carnivorous animals don't rely on menstrual blood smell of other animals to attack and make them a source of food - most animals, mammals don't menstruate at all. They do however create the endometrium lining and when pregnancy doesn't happen, their body reabsorbs the lining because unlike in female humans, female mammals' endometrium lining isn't thick. Predatory animals smell prey, regardless of the prey bleeding or not.
3. Women are weak during menstruation hence they should rest.
Well, first of all, if women all over the world rest when they are menstruating, humanity will be brought to its knees. Did you ever see your mother/sister/wife/female friends or colleagues resting the stretch of days they menstruate? Nope. You can hardly tell if a woman is on her periods. Part of the reason for that is our cultural taboo and part of it because women can handle a little bit of bloody discharge every month without letting it affect their daily routine - especially due to medical enhancement and sanitation products' availability. You never see KK take leave for a day, do you? Periods are different for every woman. Some can't even get out of bed or walk straight. Others can sprint and do contortionist yoga asanas. So, let women decide for themselves on how they feel and what they can do during periods. Your job isn't deciding how women feel and what women should do when they menstruate. Your job is to support them when they ask for it.
By always quoting 'women need rest when on periods' you are only pushing them away from education and job going. PLEASE DON'T.
Also, this tendency to make women seem so strong just because they lose blood for most part of their lifetime each month. <Rolls Eyes>
10 gallons? Anyone with half a brain won't buy this shit. |
According the the NHS the average woman loses 1/16 cup of blood which is a little over 8 teaspoons, or 40mL.
Assuming 12 periods a year, from the average menarche at age 12 to the set of menopause at 45, this is 33yrs of periods with twelve periods each which equals 396 periods.
396 periods with 1/16 cup of blood lost each time = 24.75 cups of blood. A gallon has 16 cups in it. This means there’s a loss of 1.5 gallons of blood.
Heavy menstrual flow is considered 80ml, which is double the amount which only leads to a 3 gallon blood loss over their lifetime
A person weighing 150 pounds has 5.5liters of blood in their body, which is 1.5 gallons. And If my knowledge of medicine is correct, you are in the danger zone if you lose a third of that (roughly. It depends on a few factors, it’s closer to 35% but can be up to 40, but let’s keep this simple). The means a person can lose 1.8~liters before starting to bleed to death. This is a little under a half a gallon.
Therefore it is not enough to die 20x, but rather three times.
Naah, men can bleed each month and be just fine |
You know, men keep saying that they can't handle periods and that they're grateful coz they ain't born as girls. Dude, we girls don't get any training to handle periods or have a period managing pre-programming. It's learning on the red dot. It took me 5 years to learn how to not stain my clothes and longer to understand my red aunt's whims. If guys can handle Google, Microsoft and Apple, they can handle periods like a boss and not straight die if they bleed for half an hour.
So, please dudes, be factually correct and practical. There is no need for you to either dismiss us women as weak or metal as fuck just because we bleed each month. Treat us like equal humans and listen to us instead of deciding things that you have no idea how it feels for us.
