The Power of Makeup
Scouting across random Insta accounts, it spooks me to see so many model like ladies especially Indian girls. It made me think - wow, so many girls looking like models nowadays. Having a good phone with high pixel and camera quality really helps to get a good picture. But what makes it even better is to have good makeup on that even a plain Jane ends up looking stunning and glamorous. All it takes is a small fee and a good makeup artist who can help to transform any girls into glamour princesses.
Well, there is nothing wrong with that and many girls that I have came across answered that it helps to boost their confidence with better image. I will give a personal example - my own sisters who have attended a wedding recently. They really look stunning after getting some bridal makeup and in reality, they look like any other average Indian girl. So, what exactly is the problem?
Makeup is created to help you reduce imperfections (scars/pimples) but today, makeup is used to change an individual's look all together. When the makeup is on, you get one image, when you remove it, it is totally a different image all together. Is this healthy? Can we blame women for opting such makeup? It is well known that the Indian cinema does make fun of ladies wearing so much of makeup and accusing them of misleading Indian guys. However, the same society also expects women to be decked with makeup to look good. There is no longer such thing as minimum makeup because most Indian women today do subject themselves to heavy makeup to achieve the doll -like looks.
Yup, the very famous paah dialogue ....
The pressure to look drop dead gorgeous and model like is also fueled by social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram etc. Thus, it encourages a number of Indian girls to spend so much on their appearances. What is taking place is subtle subordination of women to adhere to certain beauty standards that has been set by the society. The standard for acceptable beauty has become more and more shallow by definition with women relying fully on looks to be appreciated by men.
We can continue to meet the ever changing beauty definition or we can put a stop to it. We can decided how we wanted to look instead of letting the society decide how we should look. Then, again the change should come from women themselves.
