The Ideal Husband
There is this guy, Yazhan, who is so tolerant of his wife’s unstable behavior. His wife, Karthiga is mentally affected after a suicide attempt due to duplicity in her photography career. She makes him pose for him in the middle of the night, sometimes naked for him to take photos and she often abuses him in the process. Yet, he accepts her every abuse with love and understanding. He doesn’t make any effort to protect himself from her. The thought of having her take treatment for her mental instability is inconceivable for Yazhan.
Their neighbours complain of Karthiga’s erratic behavior. Yazhan tells their homeowner that he’ll file a sex case on him if he goes to the police.
In a vulnerable moment, Yazhan breaks down at one of Karthiga’s friend. The friend tries to take the situation to her advantage but Yazhan firmly turns her advance down, telling her that she should get married.
Karthiga drinks and Yazhan prepares fish fry for her as accompaniment for the liquor. One day, Karthiga hits Yazhan so badly – until he had to be hospitalized. To show his anger, he doesn’t talk to her but never leaves her. He continues to find ways to revive Karthiga’s career and succeeds at that too.
Karthiga gets pregnant – Yazhan didn’t deny her sex coz pasanga vittu kuduthu poghala na ponnunga thuddu kuduthu poiruvanga. Moreover, Karthiga is earning well and might go for other men for sex.
Karthiga gets the Best Photographer of the Year award and credits her husband for everything, shows his photo in her wallet, and calls him “Iron Man”.
Does the above sound absurd to you? That is exactly how it is when the roles are reversed – Yamini and Karthik. Everyone has the right to protect themselves, get help and stay away from their abusive, mentally affected spouse. Stop expecting women to accept and tolerate all kinds of shit from men. Stop glorifying women who tolerate their husbands’ shitty behavior and stop teaching women to endure every abuse from men and rehab the men in the name of marriage.
